ACUTE FRACTURESADVANCED SURGERY AND FIXATIONCOMPLICATIONS AND NON-UNIONSPORTS TRAUMATOLOGY

We are a team of orthopaedic surgeons and trauma specialists at Instituto Cugat – Quirónsalud Barcelona, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of fractures affecting any part of the musculoskeletal system.

We treat both patients with acute fractures and those with complex cases requiring specialist assessment, including competitive athletes, patients with displaced or high-energy fractures, and individuals experiencing complications or long-term effects from previous fractures.

Our goal is to restore full function to the affected area, prevent complications and minimise recovery time. We work closely with the centre’s rehabilitation team to ensure a comprehensive and safe recovery.

When should a patient visit us?

Following an injury, if there is severe pain, significant swelling, visible deformity or an inability to move or bear weight on the affected area, it is important to seek medical attention to rule out a fracture. In these cases, we provide urgent care, as early diagnosis directly influences the outcome of treatment.

We also assess patients at a later stage: fractures that have not healed properly, persistent pain following a previous injury, or stiffness and functional limitations that do not improve over time. In all cases, a clinical examination and appropriate imaging tests are the starting point.

What fractures do we treat?

We treat fractures in any part of the upper and lower limbs:

  • Upper limb: shoulder, collarbone, humerus, elbow, wrist and hand.
  • Lower limb: hip, femur, knee, leg, ankle and foot.
  • Sports fractures: stress fractures, avulsion fractures and fractures caused by indirect trauma.
  • Complex or displaced fractures: requiring detailed surgical planning.
  • Fracture complications: non-union, malunion and residual stiffness.

What treatments do we perform?

When the fracture allows, we opt for conservative treatment with controlled immobilisation and close follow-up until the fracture has healed.

When surgery is necessary, we use internal fixation techniques with plates and screws, wires or intramedullary nails, always choosing the least invasive approach that ensures adequate stability.

The treatment decision is always tailored to the individual patient: we consider the type and location of the fracture, as well as the patient’s age and activity level. Our aim is to achieve stable fixation that allows rehabilitation to begin as early as possible.

At the Instituto Cugat Fracture Unit, we combine high-precision surgery with coordinated rehabilitation to ensure comprehensive, rapid and safe bone recovery.

What does the treatment process involve?

At the first appointment, we carry out a complete clinical examination and request the necessary imaging tests —X-rays and, when indicated, a CT scan or MRI— to assess the fracture accurately. Based on this information, we work with the patient to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Throughout the follow-up period, we monitor fracture healing and adapt the rehabilitation plan according to the patient’s progress. We work in close coordination with the physiotherapy team at Instituto Cugat to optimise functional recovery from the outset.

What sets us apart?

  • Experiencia en traumatología del deporte y cirugía artroscópica: tratamos fracturas en pacientes de alto rendimiento con exigencias funcionales elevadas y plazos de recuperación ajustados.
  • Comprehensive approach: coordination between surgery and rehabilitation within the same centre allows us to oversee the entire process and make timely decisions at every stage.
  • Rapid diagnosis and treatment: we have direct access to diagnostic imaging and operating theatres, reducing waiting times and improving outcomes.
  • Personalised treatment: we do not follow a one-size-fits-all approach; every fracture and every patient requires a strategy tailored to their specific circumstances.
