THE USE OF GROWTH FACTORS IN THE RECOVERY OF SPORTS INJURIES IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR REHABILITATION

The I Symposium Advances in Sports Traumatology, held at the Centre for Recovery and Rehabilitation of Levante (CRRL), has hosted a round table on the use of growth factors in the treatment of sports injuries. The main conclusion drawn from the presentations is that, in no case are growth factors a miraculous solution, but complement the processes of rehabilitation or muscle empowerment that must be performed after injuries.

Regarding its use in sports medicine, Ignacio Muñoz Criado, traumatologist and professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Valencia (UCV), has indicated that they can be used in arthroscopic procedures for LCA (improves the incorporation and shortens the recovery period of tissues); meniscal suture (better healing, especially in avascular area); SLAP-type injuries (accelerates healing time); osteochondral defects (increases condral repair capacity); cuff suture (epidermal tissues); and in hip, shoulder, etc. arthroscopy surgeries (intraoperatively, apart from better recovery, has anti-inflammatory potential and reduces bleeding). In other uses related to sports medicine, it has highlighted applications such as for chronic tendinosis (e.g. epicondylitis), tendinopathy (rotator cuff, patellar tendon disease), osteoarthritis (condracal lesions), acute tendon injuries (SLAP, Achilles); muscle injury (twin break), or fractures and consolidation delays (metatarsal fifth base fracture.

The expert has nuanced that there are a number of potential complications associated with the use of growth factors, which should not be forgotten.

Francisco Forriol, of the Gastaldi Clinic, at the Hospital 9 de Octubre in Valencia, has analyzed his experience in the treatment with plasma rich in growth factors of muscle and tendon injuries. According to Forriol, its use is especially indicated in grade 2 muscle injuries, although it can also be used in grade 1 and 3, as a support for surgery. In tendon lesions, he has pointed out that there is a very good experience in plantar fasciitis, in addition to being indicated in epicondylosis, Achilles tendinosis or partial rotator cuff lesions. Like Muñoz, he has insisted that his use “does not mean abandoning rehabilitation or muscle empowerment”. These treatments provide a new door for the treatment of this type of injury.
