Stem cells, one more step of regenerative medicine in traumatology
Regenerative knee treatments using fat-derived cells
The breakthrough in regenerative medicine continues. After the experience in the use of proteins (Growth Factors) in traumatology for several years the team led by Dr. Ramón Cugat and the García Cugat Foundation are working with stem cells obtained from fat (ADRC) for the regeneration of musculoskeletal tissue processed with the Celution system of Cytori, with highly satisfactory results.
A first experience has already been made in football players who had to operate on the anterior cruciate ligament and it has been proven that with the mesenchymal cells derived from fat you get a better and faster maturation of the graft. Dr. Cugat advanced the preliminary results of the work at the Barcelona Knee Symposium in November 2014 and a second phase has already begun with the meniscal tissue. On April 17, the García Cugat Foundation convened in Barcelona the first Workshop on regenerative knee treatments using Fat Derived Cells (ADRC).
The Workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Montserrat García Balletbó, President of the García Cugat Foundation and Director of the Regenerative Medicine Unit of the Hospital Quirón de Barcelona and in addition to Dr. Ramón Cugat with members of his team: Drs. Roberto Seijas, Javier Cuscó, Pedro Alvarez. He participated in Dr. José María Carrillo (CEU Valencia) and vice president of the García Cugat Foundation in addition to Steven Kesten Executive Vice President of Cytori and Dr. Jordi Catalá Medical Director of the Centre Médic Alomar Cytori had previously developed this therapy in skin and heart muscle. The work of Dr. Cugat and his team pioneered Orthopedic Surgery.
