The CEU Cardenal Herrera University (CEU-UCH) of Valencia and the García Cugat Headquarters for Biomedical Research, based in Barcelona, today presented in Valencia the new García Cugat Foundation Chair in Medicine and Regenerative Surgery, created by both institutions. The development of new techniques of regeneration of muscles, tendons, cartilage and skin applying growth factors will be the lines of research of this new Chair, directed by Doctors Ramón Cugat and José María Carrillo.
Dr. Ramón Cugat, one of the sport’s most prestigious traumatologists, pioneer in arthroscopic surgery and biological treatments, has highlighted “the need to extend, through this Chair, the use of plasma rich in growth factors as treatment of multiple joint, muscle, tendious, synovial, bone and skin lesions, by their contribution to reducing pain and inflammation and improving the functionality and quality of life of patients, reducing the intake of painkillers and accelerating the postoperative”. Forty publications, four awards and one patent support the results already achieved in collaboration with THE CEU-UCH, which have led to the creation of this Chair.
For her part, the rector of THE CEU-UCH, Rosa Visiedo, has emphasized “the importance of the medical-veterinary collaboration that since had ten years promoted both entities, giving rise to first-line biomedical therapies that have a direct transfer to meet the needs of society”. Dr. José María Carrillo, full professor in the Department of Medicine and Animal Surgery of the CEU-UCH, responsible for the Traumatology and Emergency Service of the Veterinary Clinical Hospital of this University, will be the co-director of the Chair with Dr. Cugat.
The presentation of the new Chair, held today in the Palacio de Colomina de Valencia, was attended by Dr. Montserrat García Balletbó, president of the García Cugat Foundation and promoter of the Chair, the president of the Valencian Medical Institute, and representatives of the Prince Felipe Research Center and the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia, who collaborate in some of the research projects that from now on.
Collaboration in bioregenerative medicine
The CEU Cardenal Herrera University has been collaborating with the García Cugat Foundation since 2003 to conduct research in bioregenerative medicine. One of the pioneering projects that both entities will continue to promote within the framework of the new Chair is the treatment of cartilage lesions through regenerative therapies, combining the use of mesenchymal stem cells obtained from adipose tissue and plasma rich in growth factors to repair joint cartilage.
In the field of sports medicine, the new Chair will continue to promote the application of these therapies in ligament injuries (e.g. anterior knee cruciate ligament rupture), muscle injuries and tendon injuries that have a high frequency in young athletes. Another area of application, which will continue to promote both institutions from this new Chair, is that of skin regeneration in skin lesions.
