Regenerative therapies a new framework for traumatology and sports medicine. VI Scientific Conference García Cugat Foundation

The programme of the conferences

. Regenerative therapies are changing the framework of traumatology. They solve injuries with the body’s own resources effectively and often shorten recovery time.

. Proteins extracted from the blood itself, tissue and cell inducers are used. These therapies are being applied in injuries to the muscle, tendon, ligaments, cartilage, bone and skin.

. Since 2013 the Spanish Medicines Agency recognizes Growth Factors as therapy and officially considers them as a treatment.

Regenerative medicine opens the way for our own body to find solutions and begins to be an alternative to the use of prosthetics.

Some treatments such as osteoarthritis are already very advanced. The important thing is that when the degenerative process is started treatment is applied.

Dr. Ramón Cugat pioneered the use of regenerative therapies in sports medicine internationally. The advances of a decade have been made possible by scientific research that has supported clinical practice and proven its effectiveness, research carried out within the framework of the García Cugat Foundation.

One of the challenges of the García Cugat Foundation has been to solve common problems among athletes. In ligaments and tendons, biological medicine has been shown especially effective in injuries and to slow their degeneration.

FGC studies have shown, on the other hand, that Growth Factors are NOT a doping substance used correctly in the treatment of injuries.

The García Cugat Foundation specializes in biomedical research and its first work dates back to 2004 although it was formally created in 2007 to provide scientific support to new biological medicine techniques in both Growth Factors and new stem cell treatments. The foundation’s research in veterinary and human has been key for the Spanish Medicines Agency to recognize the value of Treatment Factors as therapy and since 2013 officially consider it as a treatment.

The FGC is a multidisciplinary foundation. Doctors, veterinarians, pharmacists, pioneers in biological treatments participate.

The foundation has created a Chair of Regenerative Medicine with the CEU Cardenal Herrera University to train new professionals.

  • In 2002 the study of Biological Therapies with Porteins: Growth Factors began
  • From 2003 to 2005 a multidisciplinary research group consisting of doctors, veterinarians and pharmacists was created and the clinical application of growth factors obtained by the system developed by Biotechnology Institute began.
  • In 2007 the García Cugat Foundation was formally created. Several doctoral theses on Growth Factors are prepared.
  • In 2010, research on stem cell therapies began in treatments for anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage injuries.
  • In 2013 the FGC created the Chair of Medicine and Regenerative Surgery with the CEU Universidad Cardenal Herrera.
